Alex Ironrod.

Author. Leatherman. Educator.

Alex Ironrod is the pen name of John Alex Houlton, a mature Leatherman, who grew up in the North of England and has lived in California for many years. His boot and Leather fetishes go back to his teenage years. Throughout his career, Alex has written scripts for TV documentaries, film & theatre reviews, speeches & reports. It is only in this century that he started to use this Leather passion as a spur for stories of gay BDSM and the leather lifestyle.

His contemporary mystery series leads two young LAPD detectives through a world of fast cars and kinky businessmen, in LEATHER NIGHTS and LEATHER DAYS, while finding their own Leather relationship. The two heroes go on to become private investigators in DECEPTION – PALM SPRINGS & CAGED – CATHEDRAL CITY, along with forthcoming titles.

Alex recently rewrote & republished his successful trilogy LEATHER MASTERS  and slaves - SUBMISSION, DOMINATION, OBSESSION [Finalist for the Fiction Prize of  the International Leather Coalition 2010]. He sees these main characters returning in future books that will follow his latest publication, POSSESSION  a 4-part series about consensual slavery in today’s world. PART I – A Slave’s Journey has recently appeared.

Alex stays fresh by varying his genres. RED KNIGHT RISING comes from his interest in the challenges facing gay men in the Middle Ages, by following two English knights, who sign up to go on Crusades with King Richard the Lionheart. THE MAN AND THE MASK takes readers into the bawdy and dangerous world of 1750s London, before moving on to ‘the American colonies’.  His original two books of short stories THE IRONROD CHRONICLES PARTS I & II are now out of print, with limited printed copies available through the author. All of his books in print may be found on Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and various gay and trendy bookstores.

Alex has held readings from his novels in Los Angeles & San Francisco. He has taught workshops and classes on Leather lifestyle related topics and has appeared on panels about gay erotic fiction at such events as West Coast Writers Conference [Los Angeles], International Leather Sir/boy [San Francisco], MAL [Washington DC], CLAW [Cleveland], & Desert Fetish Authority [Palm Springs], as well as several appearances at the Greater Los Angeles Writers Conferences.

Now “semi-retired,” he relishes life as author, on stage actor/ director [3 Desert Theatre League Awards], researcher & charity board member. He has recently retired from horseback riding, both Western and English, after many years as an owner/rider.

Most important are his relationships with his husband Michael, with Butch, as well as enjoying the camaraderie and support of friends, not only in LGBTQ communities across the world.
